The New Mosque was the last of the great mosques built by Ottoman Sultans. The Mosque was built by Turhan Sultan, after Safiye Sultan, mother of Mehmed The Third, laid the foundations in 1597.However for various reasons it was not completed and remained a mass for sixty years.Three architects worked seperately on the construction.

When in 1603 Mehmed The Third died, Safiye Sultan was ejected from the palace and therefore the construction was stopped.Later during the time of Turhan Sultan, the construction was restarted. It lasted three years and the mosque was ceremonially opened to worship on February 8,1663.
