The most impressive of the mosque which form the famous İstanbul silhouette is the mosque of Süleymaniye. The well- proportioned and neat esthetics of its exterior and interior charm the beholder. The Süleymaniye Mosque which was constructed by Mimar Sinan is an architectural masterpiece.
When describing Süleymaniye Mosque, Evliya Celebi writes that to humiliate the Ottoman state, the Shah of Iran sent a massive amount of gold and jewellery to be used in the building. Infuriated by this, Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent ordered that the jewels be mixed into the building’s plaster which was used for the minaret on the west side of the mosque. Who knows, you may be able to see the jewellery sent by the Shah of Iran.
