The street which connects the entrance of the tunnel at the upper end with the Taksim Square is called Istiklal Street. In the late Ottoman era, embassy buildings of Western countries were located in this street. You will see the consulate buildings of Sweden, Denmark, Russia. Also the St. Maria Draperis Church and St.Antoine Italian Church are worth to see. In addition thereis Pera Palas Hotel, which is the oldest and luxurious hotel in Istanbul.

Many famous guests, including Agatha Christie, have stayed here since it opened in 1892. And also you are able to see Galatasaray Lisesi (high school),one of the oldesr schools; the Post Office building dating back to 1875; the Cicek Pasajı with several restaurants in; Agha Mosque which built in 1834 and high Stone building which has been used as French Embassy since 1920. Lots of cafes, restaurants, pubs, shops are located in the street too. Into the Istiklal Street no kind of vehicles is allowed except fort he nostalgic tram.
