The Church on Sadrazam Ali Pasha Street, in İstanbul, is the holiest place for the Greek Orthodox believers. The front door of the Patriarchate is kept closed and entrance is gained from a door on the left. From here you pass to the Church of St. George. The Patriarchy which has been damaged by earthquakes and fires throughout history was last damaged in the great İstanbul fire of 1941.

From an architectural point of view the church is neither valuable nor very appealing. However there are very valuable historic pieces inside; such as the Patriarchal Throne, three mosaic icons and a column believed to be the Column of Flagellation to which Jesus was tied and whipped before his crucifixion, making this church one of the most valuable, history wise, in the world.
