The Eyüp Mosque and Mausoleum complex is one of the holiest places of the Islamıc world.

Eyüp El Ensari, the flag bearer of Prophet Mohammed, died in the seventh century during the Arab siege.He was buried in Eyüp and his grave was later lost.During the Conquest of Istanbul, the grave was found and a mausoleum was built in the garden of the first mosque to be built in this area.

After Mehmet the Conquerer, each succeeding sultan completed his coronation and sword-bearing ceremonies by visiting Eyüp Sultan.
