A small fishing village known to have existed before Christianity, various sources have shown that this old district was called Hallai. During the Ottoman period, Evliya Celebi wrote that during the building of Rumeli Castle commander named Bebek Celebi had a mansion and gardens built in this area, and the village was nicknamed Bebek Celebi after his death.

Midway along the western shore of the Bosphorus, Bebek is an unabashedly upscale suburb set round a pretty harbor and dominated by the academic might of the Bosphorus University.
